I bought this book in hopes of gifting it to my granddaughter but the first few chapters were about a young boy in a broken marriage and his mother hooks up with another divorced man with a teenage rebellious daughter. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A retelling of a much better book than this one. : If you love "The Velveteen Rabbit," buy that instead of this. If you love "Toy Story," buy that instead of this. This is a cross between the two, but does not have the beauty and richness of the first one, and misses the humor and childlike faith and love of the second. This is twaddle, which I am sure will be made into a animated film. Hopefully they will get a better script writer for it. This is written at a 3rd to 4th grade level, without the rich vocab you would expect from Rowling. I would say it's written for k-2nd graders, but the scary parts are harsh. First few chapters the parents are screaming at each other and the dad walks out. The mom starts dating a man with his own daughter. I understand there are real families like these (my own childhood) but I think elementary is too young to be thinking this is normal. Maybe middle school or high school age.
